5 Simple Ways to Discover Your Purpose as a Christian Teenager

Purpose seems like the buzzword now, right? And as a christian teenager, you are curious about discovering yours, right?

Everyone is talking about discovering your purpose, fulfilling your purpose, etc. However, I would like you to get some facts straight on this purpose thing.

To start with, you don’t create your purpose, you discover it! Your purpose is not something that you decide on, or create.

It is something that has already been created and decided upon. You only need to discover it!

Your purpose is what you were created to do on earth.

For example, a knife was created to cut things, right? Now, who made that decision? The knife or the maker of the knife. Surely, it is the maker of the knife.

Hence, the knife only has to fit into the purpose it has been made for, and carry it out. The same thing applies to you.

God created you, and he already had a purpose for creating you. So, you only need to discover that purpose and fit into it.

Another important thing to know about purpose is that, as a believing teenager, your purpose in life is to make Christ known to the world.

Simple! Yes, simple as that.

See, let me tell you, purpose is not as complicated as people may make it seem. Purpose is work, yes! It is labour, yes! It is death to the flesh, yes! But it is not complicated! It is not hard to grasp.

For a believer, your purpose is to make Jesus Christ known. However, what distinguishes your friend’s purpose from yours, depends on how you are fulfilling the purpose, and the set of individuals you are sent to. However, the goal is the same: To make Jesus known.

For example, you may be sent to young boys, while your friend is sent to old women, and your sister is sent to children. However, the most important goal you are all pursuing is to make these sets of individuals come to the knowledge of Christ.

The method of achieving your purpose may also differ from that of another person. Your calling may be to write articles to bless young boys, while your friend may have to speak to or record podcasts for his target audience. And your sister may have to intercede and pray for the people she has been sent to.

So, now, that we have the basics settled. Let’s talk in more detail about what purpose entails.

Purpose is death! Purpose is not Instagram or WhatsApp photos to show people what you are doing. Purpose has more to do with the background work, than the onstage performance.

And for anyone to fulfill his/her purpose, he/she must have an intimate relationship with God. Purpose fulfillment is not for laissez-faire individuals. It is not for people who are not ready for consecration. No!

It is for individuals who yield themselves. Men and women who have given it all up to the Lord. Men and women who have declared, “Take my life and let it be for you”.

5 Ways to Discover Your Purpose as a Christian Teenager

1. Seek God’s will:

Your purpose is not something you fabricate. It is something that has already been pre-determined, that you now have to discover.

And the only place to go, to know your purpose is to God. Only the manufacturer of a thing can say what he made that thing for. The same thing applies to you as a believing teenager.

Only the Lord can reveal your purpose to you. He already pre-ordained you, from when He created you.

Jeremiah 1:5

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee, and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

2. Pray:

Now, for you to seek God, to know your purpose, you have to go through the medium of prayer.

Jeremiah 33:3

Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

It is in the place of prayer that we get to know God’s will. That is where we get directions. That is where we are instructed for destiny fulfillment.

As a Christian teenager, your prayer life is not to be joked with. If you want to discover and fulfill your purpose, then you must pray.

3. Study the Scriptures:

The intimate study of God’s word cannot be overlooked in the process of purpose discovery.

2 Timothy 3:16

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

God’s word is life! From the study of God’s word, He will reveal to you clearly what your purpose is. So, whenever you study the Bible, use your pen and notepad and write things down.

Also, after studying, don’t rush out. Stay and meditate on what you have read. And as you meditate, the Lord would imprint some ideas and thoughts in your heart; in those ideas lie your purpose.

4. Pay attention to what your Heart pants for:

Check around you, what does your heart pant for? What problem in society do you see and want to create a solution to? What injustice breaks your heart, that you want to correct? Knowing this is also key to discovering your purpose.

Many times, God places a passion in our hearts to point us toward our assignment on earth. For some, they don’t like seeing children out of school, others greatly detest violence against women, some others are passionate about helping ministers of God, some are passionate about helping teenagers be on fire for God, etc.

Whatever it is for you, it is a pointer to what God would have you do.

5. Your Skills and Talents:

That talent you have is another pointer to your purpose in life. Talents are given by God. Thus, He can make use of them, to bring to pass his purpose on earth.

Whatever your talent may be, be it singing, writing, teaching, etc. it is another pointer to your purpose in life.

So, have you discovered your purpose?

If not, kindly follow the guidelines above to discover it.

If yes, are you already taking steps towards fulfilling it?

In my next post, I will talk about the steps you can take to fulfill your purpose. In addition, I would state some examples of individuals who discovered and fulfilled their purpose, for us to learn.
